Our 8th graders have been working on their projects which closes with two nights of GREAT FOOD and ENTERTAINMENT, a Dinner and Fashion Show. The students chose 12 different charities and then chose which ones they would like to work for in order to raise awareness.
The students not only had to research the organizations, they had to choose a theme to model as a team that represents the charity focus. Each team had a color that represented their charity and created theme based party favors for the guests. The students will prepare all of the food (soup and salad, 3 entrees, and a desert), along with serving and cleaning up after the main event.
This year, the second walk of the fashion show is called the "Walk of the Decades". Each group randomly chose a decade that they are putting together "outfits" to represent those years. The students also had to research music and dance moves from each decade to complete their walks.
I like to think of the final walk of the night as "Looking Good...on a Budget". It is important for the kids to learn that it is not about how much money they spent on the clothes that makes them look good.
The Dinner and Fashion Show has two main purposes. The first is to raise awareness for the charities and to understand that even at a young age, you CAN and SHOULD make a difference. The second is that in the process of focusing and learning about these organizations, it does in fact help to raise their own self-esteem.
***Tickets can be purchased through 8th grade students or through Ms. Holt/Ms. Catrambone on a first come/first serve basis
